Professional storyteller shares reading tips

Summary

Bring Me A Book Hong Kong trainer, Pauline Young, shares many reading tips with the readers. At the start of her career, Pauline worked in corporate communications at HSBC and the HK Government for ten years. After raising two children, Pauline changed career to become a trainer and professional storyteller. Pauline believes that storytelling is not only for children but also helps to improve professional presentation skills.

To be a good storyteller, we need to pay special attention to how our voice changes, the speed and to pause for effect when you read. Also, she advises parents to choose one quality book with colorful illustrations in order to stimulate the child’s imagination. When Pauline demonstrated “Hooray for fish”, children become especially excited when you animate or emphasize rhyming parts such as “Stripy, Happy and Grumpy”, “Hairy, Scary and Curly.”

Parents wish to increase their child’s learning ability but Pauline reminds parents not to forget the precious bonding moments with children. Storytelling is not a one way communication and parents can use books to make storytelling fun and interactive.  After the story, children can guess the ending. When children actively participate, they enjoy storytelling very much.
