A Single Shard

In 2002, A Single Shard became the proud recipient of the Newberry Medal. The story is set in 12th century Korea and revolves around Tree- ear who lives in a village famous for its pottery. Tree-ear is boy who has been orphaned and survives by scavenging on food discarded by others. After breaking a pot of a great master, Tree-ear is forced to work for free. He learns the craft of pottery making. He then has to go to the King?s emissary to show his master?s pottery. This story is a testament to his courage and perseverance that he shows while facing hardships in this journey.
