It Began With a Page: How Gyo Fujikawa Drew the Way

Gyo Fujikawa grew up experiencing difficulties of the ways in which both women and Japanese people lacked opportunity. But Gyo never stopped fighting for herself, her vision, loved ones, and her readers. Her teachers believed in her and supported her financially to go to art school. Eventually, her career grew and she was offered to work for Walt Disney Studios. World War II began during this time which led to her family sent to an internment camp. She did not stop fighting and successfully wrote as well as illustrated the first children’s book to feature children of colour.
