Many of our children lack the essential skills and resources to succeed in school. Hong Kong is one of the countries that parents reported lower levels of engagement with their child in preschool literacy activities, with 26% of parents, while the international standard was 54%, ranked the 41st of 45 countries, reported regularly reading books, telling stories, singing songs, or doing other preschool literacy activities with their child before they began school. 1
Access to Quality Books is Fundamental to Reading Success
- Access to books is the most important factor in positively impacting reading scores in a community. 2
- Hong Kong was one of the countries with relatively few children's books in the home. There were more than 25% of children from home with no more than 10 children's books. 1
Reading Aloud to Children is Critical for School Success
